Researchers at University College London in the UK have dubbed it ‘life skills’ and found that people who practice more tend to lead successful lives, are happier and healthier. clarified in research.

The researchers noted that people who have a happy and wealthy background don’t necessarily become successful and happy later in life. Similarly, people who started out poorly can become healthier as they age.
As a result of investigating what conditions determine life’s happiness and health, I thought that internal behavioral patterns, not the external environment, were the decisive factor.
The study was conducted as part of the UK Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELISA), a long-term study of associations between lifestyle and health.
The research team tracked and surveyed 8,119 men and women aged 52 and over, conducted questionnaires and physical examinations for participants, and judged behavioral patterns using five indicators.
5 ‘Life Skills’ People who do them are healthier
The five life skills are: Emotional stability, Self-determination, Control, Optimism, Conscientiousness.
“It doesn’t matter which of the five life skills is the most important, we should think of them as mutually influencing effects,” says Andrew Steptoe, professor of public health at University College London.
● Emotional stability The
first is “emotional stability.” Emotionally stable people are better at balancing behaviors, are less likely to suffer unfair disadvantages, are better at organizing their work environment, and are less affected by stress as a result.
Emotional stability is also required to work cooperatively in an organization such as a company. People who learned to stabilize their emotions at a younger age tended to be healthier as they got older.
The second is “self-determination”. Most of the participants had sufficient knowledge about health promotion, but often lacked self-determination to implement it.
For example, even if everyone understands that they need to exercise daily for their health, not everyone can actually do it. Those who were able to make self-determined lifestyle choices that were conducive to health promotion tended to actually age healthily.
Many health educators struggle to motivate people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, but what is really needed is the self-judgment and action of those receiving health educa- tion. Researchers say self-determination is necessary for health and well-being.
The third is “control”. People who are able to observe changes in their surroundings and situations, detect changes, and adjust their own behavior tend to be less stressed, more effective, and more productive.
People who can predict how their current actions will affect them in the future are more likely to act better and are less likely to have health problems.
The fourth is optimism. Optimistic people tend to think that good things are possible as long as they are not unrealistic. As a result, they are more willing to work on things that have the potential to produce good results. When this is combined with other “life skills”, they often have a synergistic effect and turn things around.
Other research by Steptoe and others shows that optimistic people are more willing to make lifestyle changes and are less stressed when they perceive health promotion as a good thing. People who are aware that they are enjoying life tend to have a lower incidence of lifestyle-related diseases and live longer.
For example, optimistic people who develop heart disease and are hospitalized tend to be more active in rehabilitation and produce better outcomes.
● Be conscientious
The fifth is to be conscientious. Conscientious people are concerned with how to do what they think is right. Collaborative in an organization, attentive to detail, and focused on performing well despite heavy responsibilities.
A study from the University of Illinois showed that conscientious people tended to have stable careers and marriages, were trusted by others, and were healthier. A study from Harvard University found that having conscientious people in an organization made the whole organization more productive.
It is actually easy to behave conscientiously at work and at home. A typical example is to make a list of things to do for the day, put them on your desk, and erase them in the order you did them. Recently, smartphones have become popular, so it is effective to use them effectively.
Social interaction is also an important factor in living a healthy life
It is said that 26.4% of the people who corresponded to 4 or more out of 5 “life skills”.
People with high life skills scores tended to have lower cholesterol levels, lower C-reactive protein levels, which are indicators of inflammatory disease, and lower abdominal circumferences, which indicate visceral fat accumulation.
On the other hand, among the 36.7% who answered that their health condition was “normal” or “bad”, the execution rate of “life skills” dropped to about 6%.
“Everyone loses strength as they age, but walking speed is generally considered to be a useful indicator of decline in strength. It’s a sign of decline, and if you stick to your walking habits, you can prevent it from declining,” says Steptoe.
In addition, the performance rate of “life skills” decreased to 10.5% among those who answered “I feel lonely.”
